EPT415 Extended Professional Experience (16)

Abstract:
Students in the final year of their course will work for five weeks in a setting for under fives and five weeks in a setting for 5-8 year olds. This experience is expected to provide a realistic opportunity to reflect on the work of an Early Childhood teacher within contexts appropriate to 0-8 year olds. During this experience, students will be members of staff in this setting, and will be responsible for a group of children with whom they will work as an associate teacher. Students will reflect on their developing profile as an early childhood educator and evaluate the contribution of this extended experience to their professional growth. Musical instruction will be part of this professional experience subject.

Enrolment restrictions:
Available only to students enrolled in 4th year in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching (Birth to 5 Years)/Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Science.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

-participate within the EC setting as a full-time member of staff;
-extend and refine their individual teaching and classroom management styles in order to make explicit their practice of teaching;
-develop their approach to being a teacher researcher;
-critically reflect on issues of policy and curriculum; and
-evaluate the contribution of this extended experience to their professional development.

The subject will cover the following topics:
The subject will provide students in their final year with a more realistic teaching experience in a centre and school. The professional experience is designed to allow the student to demonstrate competence across settings that meet the educational needs of children in the degree specialisation age range. Students will be expected to demonstrate levels of beginning teacher competency in all aspects of the professional experience.
