Duration: One session

Abstract:

This is an on-site (school-based) practicum of up to 30 days duration (depending upon accreditation requirements). The subject will provide students with an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge and to demonstrate self-sufficiency and independence as a beginning teacher in a secondary context through active participation in the teaching and learning process. The students will be supported and mentored in their efforts to apply their knowledge and skills by experienced curriculum professionals.



Preservice teachers will be required to successfully complete the professional experience program. This subject will allow students to demonstrate their active engagement as new professionals and meet the accreditation requirements of the NSWIT in respect of Graduate Teaching Standards.

It is a requirement that one of the following subjects must be completed prior to entry or concurrently enrolled in: EMA442 Curriculum Method 2: Visual Arts: EMH442 Curriculum Method 2: Society & Environment; EML442 Curriculum Method 2: English; EML444 Curriculum Method 2: Drama; EMM442 Curriculum Method 2: Mathematics; EMR442 Curriculum Method 2: PDHPE; EMS442 Curriculum Method 2: Science; EMT444 Curriculum Method 2: IT; EMT446 Curriculum Method 2: TAS; or, ETL411 ICT Experience.

For students who are eligible to take up the option of a second teaching area, one of the following subjects must be completed prior to entry: EMA441 Curriculum Method 1: Visual Arts: EMH441 Curriculum Method 1: Society & Environment; EML441 Curriculum Method 1: English; EML443 Curriculum Method 1: Drama; EMM441 Curriculum Method 1: Mathematics; EMR441 Curriculum Method 1: PDHPE; EMS441 Curriculum Method 1: Science; EMT443 Curriculum Method 1: IT; EMT445 Curriculum Method 1: D&T; or, ETL401  Teacher Librarianship.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have identified, developed and implemented a range of appropriate pedagogical skills;

- have identified, developed and implemented a range of classroom management skills;

- have undertaken assessment and reporting of student learning & teacher effectiveness;

- have recognised and responded to the complexities of the learning environment with the use of appropriate teaching strategies;

- have demonstrated their capacity to promote social justice for diverse groups in the years 7-12; and,

- have employed a range of ICT skills to effectively teach, assess and record student learning.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

This subject is predominantly site-based and students will be required to successfully complete the practicum as well as submit their personal evaluation which also addresses all apsects of a professional standards framework, in order to meet all requirements of the subject.

Students will address the following topics through lectures for on-campus students, or through distance education teaching materials for distance education students. This will be complemented by a professional placement of up to 30 days (dependant upon accreditation requirements).

- Pedagogical practices
- Managing the learning environment
- Relationships
- Assessment & Reporting
- Professional Responsibility
- Effective use of ICT.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 30 days duration.
