EPT445 Professional Experience: Internship (8)

Abstract:
This subject extends the development of prospective teachers to a point where they are able to assume the responsibilities and roles expected of a Graduate Teacher. It draws together pedagogical, foundational and curriculum aspects of the course. The internship is a minimum of 25 days duration in Terms 3 or 4 of the school year. It provides opportunities for students to be inducted into the profession. Placements in diverse non-school settings are encouraged. Field Studies Centres, isolated Aboriginal communities in the NSW, Northern Territory and Western Australia and international locations are offered as possible settings for the Internship experience.

Enrolment restrictions:
Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Honours) Integrated Honours or the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) (Honours) Integrated Honours programs or as determined by the course coordinators.
Not available to students who have completed EPT404 or EPT417
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate mastery of the performance skills in teaching independently for an extended period of time;
- focus attention on the student learner and their role in enhancing learning outcomes;
- engage in critical self-assessment of teaching competence;
- demonstrate an understanding of the Graduate Teacher Standards as requirements for accreditation as a teacher and the capacity to assess their own competence in relation to the Professional Teaching Standards.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Communication and negotiation skills to engage with learners, parents and other staff with attention to informal and formal assessment and reporting.
- School /community partnerships.
- Professional Standards and their implications for beginning teachers.
- Consolidation of aspects of planning, preparation, managing the learning environment, assessment, evaluation, and reporting.
- Refining their professional teaching portfolio in preparation for employment.

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 25 days duration.
