ESL102 Foundations in Literacy Studies K-2 (8)

Abstract:

This subject is designed to provide an understanding of literacy teaching and learning in Early Stage 1/Stage 1 with an added focus on catering for the specific needs of individual students. The subject will consider language acquisition along with the reading and writing processes at the acquisition and early stages of development. The subject will explore models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing reading, writing, listening, talking and visual literacy. Relevant policy and curriculum documents will be examined. Children's Literature, poetry and texts used for instruction will be examined as will text types for writing at the Early Stage 1/Stage 1 levels. The subject includes a focus on pedagogies for Indigenous students.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate a working understanding of language acquisition and the reading and writing processes at the acquisition and early development stages;

- demonstrate an understanding of a range of teaching strategies for teaching and assessing speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing at Early Stage 1/Stage 1;

- demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness of speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing at Early Stage 1/Stage 1;

- be able to identify text features which make texts appropriate for students in Early Stage 1/Stage 1 (texts which are read or shown to students as well as those used for instruction purposes);

- demonstrate developing skill in the analysis and interpretation of reading and writing samples at the early Stage 1/Stage 1 levels;

- be conversant with relevant policy and curriculum documents, in particular K-6 English syllabus and appropriate support documents;

- be able to develop simple lesson plans for literacy lessons with individuals or small groups at Early Stage 1/Stage 1; and,

- have an understanding of some of the issues surrounding, and strategies for, developing literacy skills of indigenous students.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Language acquisition theories - Reading acquisition process and theoretical approaches to reading instruction - Writing acquisition and theoretical approaches to writing instruction - Catering for diversity with particular emphasis on developing literacy skills of indigenous students - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Speaking and Listening pedagogy - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Reading and viewing pedagogy - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Fluency, vocabulary development and comprehension - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Writing and representing pedagogy (includes text types) - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Spelling and handwriting - A balanced approach to literacy Instruction: Phonemic awareness and phonics - Assessing reading development and identifying student needs: Running Records - Assessing writing development and identifying student needs: writing sample analysis - Selecting texts for early Stage 1/Stage 1 (fiction, poetry, non-fiction, ICT based texts)
