Abstract:
This subject assists you to develop and practise skills in identifying children with additional needs. Emphasis is placed on the planning and implementation of programs and provisions to support their inclusion in a variety of children’s services. It will build on your knowledge and skills about typical developmental patterns and working with others to plan programs which meet the needs of a range of children. It will also build on previous knowledge of positive guidance to assist you to develop the knowledge and skills to foster pro-social behaviour in children and to identify, monitor and plan for changing behaviours of concern in individuals and groups of children.

Enrolment restrictions:
Prior to enrolment students must have completed the Certificate III Children’s Services AND Stage One of the Diploma of Children’s Services (AQF 5) through TAFE Western and Riverina Institute.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the types, characteristics and causes of a range of additional needs or behavioural concerns through investigations and observations;
- be able to develop, implement, monitor, review and adapt a child-centred plan of inclusion for a child and/or group of children with additional needs or behavioural concerns with parental permission and in consultation with others;
- be able to monitor and review strategies in accordance with service practices, statutory requirements and quality frameworks;
- be able to establish and apply limits and guidelines for behaviour for individual children or groups of children; and,
- be able to consult with others about ongoing issues that arise.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Identifying children with additional needs or behavioural concerns through investigating, observing and discussing concerns with other professionals
- Develop a plan for inclusion in consultation with the child (when appropriate) parents, staff and other professionals
- Implement strategies to meet the child's additional needs and programs based on inclusive practices and the child's responsiveness
- Consult with and provide support to others about agreed strategies, issues that arise and share information about progress with all involved
- Monitor and review strategies in accordance with workplace practices, statutory requirements and quality frameworks
- Identify and demonstrate strategies for forming positive relationships and involving children in the decision making process
- Demonstrate knowledge of service policies and procedures relating to behaviour guidance
- Demonstrate knowledge of family and community culture, values and beliefs that impact on behaviour guidance
- Identify and demonstrate strategies for collaborating with families, colleagues and other professionals when developing and implementing behaviour plans
