Abstract:
The subject is a general introduction to the education of children with diverse abilities. Specifically, it explores and examines historical and current educational practices related to diverse learners. Pre-service teachers will develop knowledge and skills that will allow them to identify and respond to individual educational needs. The subject also provides Pre-service teachers with an insight into contemporary debates about educational diversity including political and philosophical issues related to segregation and integration, mainstreaming, normalisation, and inclusion.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate an awareness of the issues related to the inclusion of adolescents with diverse needs in education programs;
- be able to describe current definitions, policies and practices, integration and inclusion in education in Australia;
- demonstrate, using appropriate language, an awarness of the diversity of adolescents with special needs and knowledge of the educational programming requirements;
- be able to describe the most commonly used techniques in the assessment of adolescents with diverse needs and relevant support services;
- be able to show an understanding of the professional sensitivities and support that should be given to the families of young people with diverse needs, particularly in regard to parent communication;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of a range of strategies which would support the inclusion of young people with diverse needs in school education;
- be able to define the Individual Educational Program (IEP) and describe how it can be incorporated into the overall structure of a general education program; and,
- be able to demonstrate an awareness of the various techniques in behaviour management and ways to develop and enhance positive social interaction in a mainstream setting.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- sources of knowledge which inform the debate around inclusive education; - knowledge of learning theories and philosophies related to best practice in the education of young people with diverse abilities; - understanding the notion of inclusion and its practical manifestation in educational settings; - identifying learner needs and designing interesting and challenging learning experiences with reference to current curriculum documents; - intelligence - what is it? - academic success; - exceptionality; - stereotypes and side effects; - language and meaning; - acceptance and friendship; - pathways for exceptional people; - medical reasons and responses for exceptionality; - ethic dimensions of intervention.
