Abstract:
This subject allows students to examine the curriculum for children with disabilities. The focus is on the overall process of curriculum development and the decisions of what and how to teach.
The particular emphasis will be on students who have high support needs.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- plan and evaluate the role into which he or she is placed in the learning environment of the child - both as a facilitator and curriculum planner;
- demonstrate a contextual understanding of adaptive behaviours as an important index of the effective functioning of the child with developmental delay or disabilities;
- review areas of the curriculum which will assist the student with age appropriate behaviour, social and recreational skills and independent life skills within integrated environments;
- design strategies required for the selection of skills and instruction in the relevant curriculum areas, emphasising the importance of collaborative communication with parent/care-giver in the planning and follow-up of introduced curriculum.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Principles for guiding curriculum decisions. - The significance of adaptive behaviours as an index of ability to function as appropriately and independently as possible with age peers. - Curriculum decisions and program planning in the areas of daily living skills, functional academics, leisure and recreation, and vocational needs. - The importance of planning and implementing curriculum within integrated community-based environments.
