Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the education of young children with diverse learning needs. It aims to critically examine the historical influence of inclusion policy in Australia and its impact on early intervention and inclusion. Child and family-centred inclusive practice will be considered with a focus on supporting families in decision making and planning for early intervention, and the impact of intervention on families. The subject emphasises the need for collaboration and the ability to work with other professionals. Models, practices and teaching strategies to support inclusion in the early childhood curriculum will also be explored.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- analyse current Australian policies and practices in relation to early intervention and inclusion;
- improve outcomes for young children through differentiation and the application of organisational and pedagogic flexibility;
- design appropriate learning environments for young children with diverse learning needs;
- plan for successful transition to educational settings using the collaborative problem solving process;
- demonstrate professional sensitivities and support for families of young children with diverse learning needs;
- develop instructional strategies and educational programmes for children with diverse learning needs; and,
- design, implement and incorporate an inclusive education programme for a child in a variety of early childhood settings.
 

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Inclusion legislation and policy in relation to the Early Childhood context
- Practical, attitudinal and policy issues in relation to inclusion
- Considerations of a child with a disability and their family within their ecological context
- Transition
- Social and academic inclusion
- Preparation for inclusion
- Organisational and pedagogic flexibility
- Instructional strategies and instructional design for diverse learning needs
- Equipment and access to specialist services
- Relationships with family and community
