Abstract:

In this subject students will examine the current policy and legislative basis for inclusion. Students
will reference their work in this subject to their current practice identifying needs, strengths and
opportunities in their settings related to the delivery of inclusive education. The final
assessment product for this subject will focus on the development of an inclusive education policy that can be scaled up and applied in an appropriate educational setting.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- articulate the social, moral, cultural, legal, educational and political influences on the development of inclusive policy and legislation; 
- describe the relationship between principles, legislation, policies and practice in inclusive education; 
- critically analyse relevant legislation from the federal, state and local levels for the provision of educational services to individuals with disabilities and identify its relationship to daily practice;
- define the characteristics of effective policy;
- analyse policy and evaluate current inclusive education policy documents; and
- write an inclusive education policy that scales up what is known from best practice in inclusion. 
 

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Historical context for special education and inclusive education.
- Individuals with disabilities and the law.
- Social, moral, cultural, legal, educational and political influences on the development of inclusive policy and legislation.
- Policy analysis.
- Policy writing.
- Scaling up law and policy.
