Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance student learning outcomes. The impact of ICTs on the role of the school's information specialist and on the provision of information services in schools is considered, with particular emphasis on the Internet. Students gain hands-on ICT experience through an online conference program using a suite of asynchronous and synchronous online tools. A range of topics are explored including ICT integration issues in schools, Internet-based literature initiatives, knowledge management, digital information service provision in schools, and information policy issues in schools.

Enrolment restrictions:

Not available to students who have completed ETL511 ICT Experience (METL), or ETL411 ICT Experience for Teacher Librarians (MASTL)

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of ICTs on the role of the school's information specialist and/or information leadership team, and the impact of ICTs on information service provision in schools;
- Be able to provide evidence of their own skill development in the use of ICTs, including a suite of asynchronous and synchronous online tools;
- Be able to articulate the general principles of communications between, and networking of ICTs, in particular the Internet and intranets;
- Be able to provide continuing strategic direction about the impact of ICTs on the development of information literacy and professional development programs in schools;
- Be able to identify key digital information sources and services to support the information needs of the school community;
- Be able to engage in professional dialogue through online interaction with library and teaching colleagues;
- Be able to demonstrate the skills of task definition, analysis, synthesis and evaluation through the completion of a self-efficacy measure of ICT competency, and the writing of a web-based discussion paper and a portfolio; and
- Be able to articulate and demonstrate the potential of ICT forums, such as online conferencing, to other individuals and/or professional communities.
