Abstract:

This subject is designed to provide an overview of the provision of information services within the learning and teaching context of the school. Print and digital sources are examined as well as search strategies and resource evaluation. The teacher librarian's role in the provision of information services in the school is explored, including the use of Web 2.0 tools

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to critically evaluate the learning and teaching context in which print and digital resources are used in schools;
- be able to assess and determine the value of a range of print and digital (in particular web-based)sources to school library users;
- be able to evaluate the development of effective search strategies by teacher librarians who are providing information resources to students and staff in schools;
- be able to identify and critically assess criteria for evaluating print and web-based resources;
- be able to link the provision of information services to students to the development of information literacy in the school; and
- be able to evaluate and use a range of Web 2.0 tools which can be used to provide information services in schools.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The learning and teaching context of information resource provision - Print and digital information resources - Effective search strategies - Critical evaluation of print and electronic resources. - Information services to staff and students - Information services via the school library website - The collaborative role of the teacher librarian in the provision of information services - The use of Web 2.0 tools in information provision
