CSU Discipline Area: Economics and Finance (ECFIN)

Abstract:

This subject examines the nature and operation of financial institutions and markets in Australia and the economics of the financial system in which they operate. A wide range of financial institutions, markets and securities are examined in detail, together with such concepts as financial intermediation, financial flows, interest rate determination and money supply formation. Emphasis is placed on contemporary issues in our financial system.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* Be able to explain the nature and operation of Australia's financial institutions and markets;
* Be able to explain the causes of change in financial conditions;
* Be able to apply analytic skills to the interpretation of developments and changes in financial markets;
* Be able to explain and evaluate the role and impact of Government policy on the financial system.

Corporate debt markets 
Government debt markets 
Financial flows 
Interest rate determination 
Term and risk structure of interest rates 
Exchange rate determination 
Equity markets
