CSU Discipline Area: Economics and Finance (ECFIN)

Abstract:
This subject introduces the student to the role of finance in corporate management. Students will develop skills in the identification and analysis of financial problems, particularly the performance of the firm and project evaluation. Students are introduced to the commercial environment in which the firm operates, as it relates to its financial situation.

Postgraduate students only. Not available to students who have completed ACC515 , FIN516 , FIN571 .
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to evaluate the firm's position in its operating environment;
- be able to demonstrate competence in the use of selected financial techniques which will assist management in the decision-making and control functions.
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the underlying theory of financial decision-making
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Financial statement analyis
Cash flow evaluation – the time value of money
Capital budgeting and cashflow principles
Project evaluation techniques
Risk in project evaluation
The cost of capital
Leverage and capital structure
Working capital management
