CSU Discipline Area: Economics and Finance (ECFIN)

Abstract:
This subject examines the nature and operation of financial institutions and markets in Australia as well as the economics of the financial system in which they operate. A wide range of financial institutions, markets and securities are examined in detail, together with such concepts as financial intermediation, and interest rate and exchange rate determination. The emphasis is on how markets and the instruments used in them can be employed to manage financial risks which businesses, individuals and governments face.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critically analyse and provide informed comment on recent developments in the organisation and structure of the financial system, various financial markets and the instruments of these markets;
- be able to investigate, explain and analyse the causes of changes in interest and exchange rates on business and financial markets;
- be able to identify the impact of exchange rates and interest rates on financial markets, instruments and business and demonstrate how appropriate use of instruments and techniques can be used to manage and mitigate financial risks.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- organisation and structure of financial markets;
- bank and non-bank financial institutions;
- corporate debt markets;
- Government debt markets;
- interest rate determination;
- term and risk structure of interest rates;
- structure and operation of the foreign exchange market;
- exchange rate determination;
- equity markets;
- derivative markets.
