Abstract:
This subject introduces the concept of personal, property, liability and business risk management. It provides a framework that allows identification of risk, the probability of risk, the cost of risk; and the means of managing risk. To the extent that risk cannot be avoided or managed, self-insurance and the laying off the risk to an insurance provider is examined. The key feature of this subject is the development of needs based solutions to risk management across a full range of options and the development of personalised solutions.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* understand the concept of risk and risk management
* understand the legal environment for financial planners of risk management
* collect data required to do a full risk analysis and management assessment
* analyse client situations in terms of risk to person, property or to loss due to legal liability
* assess probability of a risk event occurring, the frequency of the event and the likely cost to the client
* identify ways of ways of managing or diminishing the risk
* look at the potential for full or partial self-insurance where the risk cannot be avoided or managed to an acceptable level
* advise clients on the benefits, issues and costs of risk transfer and what product solutions are available
* advise clients regarding the best mix of risk avoidance, management and transfer
* assess business risk and advise on including general risk management, professional, public and product liability and succession planning.
