Abstract:
This subject builds on the concepts involved in estate planning that are explained in subject FIN560, placing particular attention to the application of various law, processes and principles which are involved in dealing with a client's needs for wealth preservation and transfer.
Financial and estate planning operations are explained within a broader professional occupation of estates practice.
The subject introduces students to the tasks associated with the identification of wealth preservation and transfer needs of clients and the development of estate administration plans. This subject prepares students for proceeding with the specialist Accredited Estate Planning Strategist (AEPS) designation offered by the Financial Planning Association of Australia, conditional on this subject being approved by that organisation.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to reflect critically on the structure, regulation and participants in the private wealth management sector;
- be able to analyse and evaluate various approaches to the estate planning process;
- be able to use effective communication skills and estate planning principles to establish client needs and objectives and develop an estate administration plan then sets out the proposed method of administration of the client's estates that is proposed to meet the client's needs and objectives;
- be able to conduct technical research to complete estate planning work;
- be able to create, present, and interpret a professional-quality Statement of Advice that includes a detailed estate administration proposal.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the role of estate planning in the professional financial planning;
- the estate planning process including the client situation reveiw;
- identifying the extent of the estate;
- successful estate planning - responding to the needs, intent and objectives of the client;
- establishing key strategies for pre- and post-death estate administration;
- identifying key risks in estate planning including relationship risk, family continuity risk, life risk, taxation issues and family business retention;
- the role of superannuation in wealth preservation;
- client capacity, trustee roles and relationship breakdown;
- constructing Estate Administration Plans.
