Abstract:
The aim of this subject is to provide an introduction to selected concepts and theories from biology, sociology and psychology which have been applied to the study of ageing. The relevance to practice of a sound grounding in theoretical knowledge in gerontology and the multi-disciplinary nature of that knowledge are discussed. The subject provides an overview of research in gerontology and provides experiential learning in formulating a research proposal.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding at a basic level the
theories of ageing outlined
- be able to evaluate the contribution of the different
disciplines to an understanding of the ageing experience
- be able to describe the research process
- be able to outline several different approaches to research
- be able to formulate a research proposal
