Abstract:
Health and well-being in later life are the central themes of this subject. To illustrate these themes, the subject examines theoretical and practical issues associated with the life-style choice and self-determination of older adults. Four topic areas are elucidated: nutrition and ageing; education and learning in later life; reminiscence and ageing; and work and ageing. In addition, students will have the opportunity to select an additional topic area in their field of specialisation or interest.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to distinguish between beneficent and authoritarian
approaches to the promotion of self-determination for the older
adult in lifestyle choice and provide examples of each
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles of
professional care-givers in providing support to older adults
whose health status and ability to live independently is
diminished
- be able to explain the relationship between health status and
nutritional risk factors for older adults in the context of the
topic on nutrition
- be able to explain the concept of "gerogogy" in the context of
the topic on education and learning in later life
- be able to explain the central principles of reminiscence
therapy in the context of the topic on reminiscence
- be able to analyse an area of specialisation or interest
apposite to the self-determination of older adults
- be able to analyse media comment on contemporary ageing issues.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Self-determination for older adults: theoretical/ideological issues - Gerontological research on quality of life for older adults - Nutrition and the older adult - Education and learning in later life - Area of special interest - Reminiscence therapy and the aged - Working and ageing
