GER406 Issues in Dementia Care and Communication (8)

Abstract:
This subject introduces students to professional knowledge and theoretical and practical approaches which will enhance their ability to communicate with and care for older people with dementia and/or mental health vulnerabilities in community and residential care contexts. Models of communication and care which lead to appropriate, respectful and facilitative ways of supporting the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of older people with dementia will be examined. Theoretical and practical approaches which focus on the facilitation of positive environments, effective forms of communication and support of individual identities within these client groups, will be identified. Current understandings of dementia and models of care and communication with people experiencing this condition will be examined and critiqued at an advanced level.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate awareness of current knowledge in relation to the causes, syndromes, symptoms, life impacts and care needs of older people experiencing dementia
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the common and diverse biological and cognitive changes associated with different forms of dementia
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of common and diverse social and emotional responses to dementia throughout the progression of the disease and the potential impacts on a person's identity, ability to communicate and sense of security.
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of common and diverse needs of family carers
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of team work and an ability to contribute effectively to team approaches to providing appropriate and high quality care for those experiencing dementia and their families.
- be able to discuss ethical, human rights and legal issues related to behaviour change and/or diminished legal capacity
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Communication and Care in Dementia - Causes, symptoms and common treatments for dementia illnesses - Communication and care challenges and models Module 2: Behaviour as Communication - Theory and context of behaviour - Internal and external influences on behaviour - The role of stress in behaviour Module 3: Advanced Issues in Dementia Care and Communication - advanced strategies for communication in dementia care (client, family, care team) - understanding challenging behaviour in dementia - supporting dignity and wellbeing in dementia care - issues in carer support
