Abstract:
This subject centres on the nature and origins of terrorism. It will examine the international history of terrorism, its motivations and aims, including the political and theological influences which have shaped the face of the current threat. Critical events which have contributed to the current situation will also be identified and explored. Key political and religious extremist groups will be profiled and their methods of operation identified. The corresponding history, motivators and methods of counterterrorist measures will be addressed alongside the above.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to explain the terms terrorism and counterterrorism, and describe the history and origins of international terrorism
- be able to recognise the political and theologically based ideologies which have informed terrorist and counterterrorist activities
- be able to critique the motivations and aims of terrorist and counterterrorist groups and/or states
- be able to identify ways in which acts of terrorism have created political and social change
- be able to explain the modus operandi of a variety of terrorist groups
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Definitions of the terms terrorism and counterterrorism - History of terrorism and counterterrorism, pre 20th century - History and ideology of key religeous and political groups - History and ideology of radical groups - 20th century terrorism: 1900 to 1938 - 20th century terrorism: World War 2 - 20th century terrorism: 1946 to 2000 - Landmark attacks - Modus operandi
