Abstract:
This subject explores the theoretical foundation of contemporary management thinking and how it has been adopted and modified in law-enforcement organisations. It draws upon the history of management theory, the evolution in thinking about management in the public sector and the major developments in governance and accountability in law enforcement organisations in Australia and overseas.

Assumed Knowledge:
Students in this subject should be working in a police organisation or one that is very similar. Students working at any level of management will be able to apply their knowledge and experience of the organisation to be assessment tasks in the subject.
Enrolment restrictions:
Students require internet access. All materials for the subject, with the exception of the Study Guide, are delivered electronically. Some documents are quite large and having broadband access is beneficial.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of influential contemporary approaches to management theory
- be able to reflect critically upon the application of management theory to law enforcement organisations
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of practical aspects of the management of law enforcement organisations
- be able to demonstrate independent research and writing skills

- governance and accountability in policing organisations
- performance management and its implementation in policing organisations
- implementation of current theories of governance and accountability in policing organisations
- financial management in the public sector
- the role of professional ethics in contemporary police management
- implementation of performance management in policing organisations
- theoretical structure of organisational change
- drivers of organisational change in policing organisations
- practical implications in the planning and implementation of change
- promoting and managing continuous change
