Abstract:
This subject analyses the principles, dimensions and qualities of contemporary executive leadership. There will be particular emphasis on the challenges and dynamics of strategic police leadership. It explores the dynamics of operational policing from the leadership perspective and explores the impact of political and social influences.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to investigate, analyse and synthesise the broad body of knowledge of the history and context of leadership in policing, including relevant developments overseas
- be able to demonstrate mastery of the key theoretical underpinnings in leadership generally, public sector leadership, and policing leadership, and critically reflect on the impact of these on police professional practice
- be able to apply established leadership theories to the policing context and critically analyse the application of these with reference to your professional practice
- be able to demonstrate an ability to analyse the contextual influences on leadership in your organisation and to develop a strategic leadership approach capable of being communicated to a range of professional and high level audiences.
- be able to plan and execute a substantial piece of scholarship which demonstrates a capacity to locate and analyse relevant theory and research in the field of leadership in policing and apply that theory and research to professional leadership practice
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- - Principles of effective leadership
- - The role of a leader in corporate governance and the creation and maintenance of corporate culture
- - Leading police organisations into the future
- - Government authority and relationships
- - The dynamics of the political/bureaucratic interface
- - The principles of proper influence and protecting the rights of police personnel and the public
- - Executive judgement, discretion and ethical decision making
- - Policy identification, development, marketing and implementation
- - Relationship building and principles of effective partnerships
- - Financial and performance productivity, accountability and credibility
- - People/workforce management and development
- - Office of constable and the separation of powers
Residential School
This subject contains a optional 3 day residential school.
To give students the opportunity to consider issues relating to executive leadership in a conference structure.
