CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:

This subject will examine the more complex design processes, limitations and demands that industry places on the creative process. Students will study the essential elements of pre-press production with an emphasis on creating the right files for the job. They will also learn how to prepare a brief and in turn brief others such as printers and photographers. This subject will explain the function and design development of corporate identity, promotional techniques, packaging and signage for specific clients and these will be integrated into the design outcomes.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the graphic designer and related professionals
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the methodology and processes involved in designing for professional organisations
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the use of new technologies as applied to design production in these areas.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- packaging - product security and package construction - labelling - product information - corporate identity for professional displays and community groups - signage systems - print ready artwork - ethics - design time management - setting up a studio - participating in work experience - the creative processes with its limitations and demands within the industry - the networking of professionals within the industry
