HCS101 Introduction to the Social Sciences 1 (16)

Abstract:

This subject is intended for Aboriginal students who are in or contemplating careers in the human services. Built around a core of generic study skills, and using problem-based/adult learning approaches, the subject provides an introduction to the fields of applied psychology and sociology with a particular focus on their applicability to Indigenous communities.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Understand, at an introductory level, the principal methods and theories of psychology
Understand key psychological aspects of human development
Understand the fundamental concepts related to how behaviour is learned
Understand fundamental concepts and approaches to human personality
Understand psychological concepts and approaches to mental disorders
Be able to explain and describe basic concepts and research tools used by sociologists and social scientists in general
Be able to compare and contrast the major schools of thought in social analysis of society and culture
Be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of how society and social institutions operate
Be able to constructively critique and evaluate contemporary issues and problems from a sociological perspective
Be able to complete written and oral work at an academic level

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Unit One: Introduction to the social sciences Unit Two: Human Development and Personhood Unit Three: Individuals and family Unit Four: Community and society Unit Five: Environment and culture
