Abstract:
This subject provides an introduction to the welfare sector in Australia and to concepts and issues underpinning welfare practice. An overview of the development of the welfare sector is presented and issues related to vulnerability to disadvantage are considered. The subject also provides an overview of the delivery of social services, including government, non-government and not-for-profit organisations.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
demonstrate an understanding of welfare in Australia, service delivery models and organisations;
demonstrate a broad appreciation of the professional knowledge base, core values, ethics and issues underpinning welfare; and
demonstrate an appreciation of the impacts of vulnerability.

- Welfare in Australia - introduction and overview - Orientation to welfare services - Service delivery systems and organisations - Social vulnerability - impacts of socioeconomic disadvantage, gender, location and ethnicity - Welfare practice - introduction to professional knowledge base, fields of practice, client groups and practice ethics and values
