Abstract:

This subject uses a case-based approach to explore social work theory and practice during the assessment stage with individuals, groups and communities. It builds on the engagement skills developed in the first  theory and practice subject. Case studies focus on assessment in culturally diverse and indigenous contexts.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to successfully conduct an assessment from beginning to end, in a range of practice contexts 

- be able to identify and apply appropriate theoretical frameworks (both discourses and practice theory) for undertaking assessment at all levels of social work practice, including individual, group and community levels

- be able to demonstrate skills in report writing, case notes, use of assessment aids and assessment schedules

- be able to demonstrate understanding of risk assessment including application of theory, stages and risk assessment schedules

- be able to critically reflect on their own behaviour and use of self in assessment of individuals, groups and communities

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of group work assessment, including communication patterns and task and maintenance processes

- be able to apply stages of group development to the process of group work assessment

- be able to identify appropriate leadership skills of group facilitation and its impact on group assessment

- be able to identify and apply a range of community work models to community work assessment 

- be able to apply appropriate community work roles to community work

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Importance of social work theory: frameworks for assessment (Discourses and practice theories)

-Cultural diversity (Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse communities)

- Individual and family assessment

-Group work and group work assessment

- Community work and community work assessment

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.

This residential school aims to teach practice theory and skills in the areas of assessment with individuals, groups and communities.  Activities include lectures, tutorials, workshops, simulations and structured role plays.
