Abstract:

This subject uses a case-based approach to explore social work theory and practice during the intervention stage with individuals, groups and communities, including organisational issues. It builds on the engagement and assessment skills developed in previous theory and practice subjects. Case studies focus on intervention in disability and child wellbeing and protection contexts in human services.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and implement a community development strategy from beginning to end, including being able to articulate the theoretical base from which this strategy is developed
- be able to demonstrate competence in a range of community work skills including budgeting, submission writing, community capacity building, awareness of social capital and sustainability issues and working with informal care networks

- be able to identify the role of the worker as change agent within an organisation, including understanding change management processes and roles
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of and capacity to articulate the role of organisational partnerships in the current welfare context
- be able to demonstrate the capacity to critically apply a range of counselling frameworks to specific casework contexts, including identifying their developing practice model and areas for future development
- be able to demonstrate an ability to intervene and deal with a range of difficult issues in group work including working with involuntary groups, co-leadership issues, dealing with conflict, individual roles

- be able to demonstrate consistent critical reflection on their own social work practice, incorporating new knowledge and skills into their practice

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Community development and people with disabilities

- Planning and implementing a community development strategy

- Applying for funding and writing reports

- Lobbying, using the media, working with volunteers and informal networks, managing change 

- Counselling with individuals, couples and families - child wellbeing and protection

-  Crisis intervention

- Brief solutions and strengths-based approaches

- Narrative therapy

- Effective group leadership - challenges in groups and co-leadership

- Working with diverse groups, involuntary clients and conflicts

- Dealing with individual behaviours and roles in groups

- HIdden agendas

- Professional issues

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.

The residential school will invole the students in interactive experiential learning, developing skills in a safe environment. It will provide specific lectures and opportunities for discussion and clarification of key concepts and processes. There will be individual and group activities to ensure that students have a clear understanding of the assessment process in preparation for their second practicum.
