Abstract:

This subject is the final theory and practice subject in the Bachelor of Social Work. It requires students to critically apply practice methods to a range of social work contexts including systemic work with individuals, families and groups and working with communities and organisations. The focus is on evaluation of an intervention and the student articulating their own developing approach to social work practice. By the end of this subject students will demonstrate reflective practice and integration of theory and practice at the level of a new graduate.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate critical application of a range of systemic interpersonal interventions with individuals, couples and families across a number of social work contexts
- be able to apply group work principles and practices to a range of social work contexts
- be able to critically apply community work principles to a range of social work contexts
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to work effectively with, and influence, organisational change in a range of situations
- be able to demonstrate reflective practice and the ability to argue for a particular theoretical approach in a given situation in all the above practice areas

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Advanced casework and group-work interventions with specific client groups and issues
- Advanced community development and capacity building in specific contexts: international, rural and remote and entrenched/enmeshed communities
- Influencing structural change within and between organisations, communities and government
- Professional practice with issues of gender, sexuality, race, spirituality, culture, class and violence
- Strategies for critical professional development: reflection in supervision, learning and practice

in the context of two case studies:

Case Study 1: (Target Population: eg Women)(Target Problem: eg. disadvantage/disempowerment) (Target Service Context: eg. International Development/Cross Cultural projects)

Case Study 2: (Target Population: Older people) (Target Problem: eg. human dignity/isolation - access to services/support) (Target Service Context: eg. aged and community care assessment and service brokerage)

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.

This residential school will prepare students for their first jobs as new graduates. It will focus on systemic counselling frameworks and skills and application of group work, community work and organisational knowledge. Learning activities include lectures, tutorials and workshops involving simulations and structured role plays.
