Duration: Two sessions
Abstract:
This is the first of two field education subjects. Students have the opportunity to practise professional skills, apply theoretical understanding and integrate theory and practice in a range of practice settings. Each student is supervised by a qualified social worker. Placements involve a range of learning opportunities, structured using an individually negotiated learning plan which is designed in collaboration with the student, field teacher and university staff.

Students must be enrolled in the MSW (Professional Qualifying)
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate the minimum standards of competence of an entry level social worker, with reference to the standards specified in the Practice Standards for Social Workers (AASW, 2003), and Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (AASW 2008) in the assessment and intervention stages of a professional interaction;
- be able to formulate and evaluate their performance on individual learning objectives specified in the learning plan;
- be able to identify and expand their learning styles;
- be able to practise human service work reflectively, integrating theory and practice into their practicum context;
- be able to professionally function in the field in an ethical manner at all times;
- be able to autonomously seek supervision and guidance in their professional development;
- be able to develop a constructive supervision relationship with their field teacher.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Preparation for Prac Module:
Students prepare for and demonstrate readiness for professional placement including:
- ethical and professional standards of behaviour and practice
- engagement in the professional supervision process
- engagement in the agency environment
- impact of placement upon self
- integration and reciprocation of theory and practice
Students must complete this module at a satisfactory standard before being able to commence the practicum stage of the subject.
Practicum program:
Students are required to complete between 40 - 90 days of field education under the supervision of a qualified social worker. Learning objectives are based on the formulation of a detailed learning plan which is individually negotiated by the student, field teacher and CSU staff. There are a minimum of three liaison contacts with CSU staff including 1 on-site visit from a CSU staff person or their representative.
