Abstract:

This is the second of two field education subjects. Students have the opportunity to develop practice skills and theoretical understanding and to integrate theory and practice in a different practice setting and field of practice from their first placement. In this subject students move beyond the assessment stages of social work practice to the intervention and evaluation stages. By the end of the subject, students will have achieved satisfactory standards of performance in the competency standards required for entry level graduates.

HCS501 and HCS502 and HCS505

Enrolment restrictions:

Students must be enrolled in the MSW (Professional Qualifying)

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate the minimum standards of competence of an entry level social worker, with reference to the standards specified in the Practice Standards for Social Workers (AASW, 2003), and Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (AASW 2008) in the assessment and intervention stages of a professional interaction;
- be able to formulate and evaluate their performance on individual learning objectives identified in the learning plan;
- be able to consolidate expansion of their learning styles;
- be able to demonstrate the ability to critically analyse the policy and practice environment of the placement;
- be able to develop a constructive supervision relationship with their field teacher;
- be able to practise the principles and values specified in the AASW Code of ethics;
- be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse their own developing practice including strengths and areas for future development;
- be able to develop a feasible professional development plan and take initial steps to implement changes identified as being necessary.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Students are required to complete the balance of days needed to meet the 140 days of total supervised field education for Bachelor of Social Work. The minimum number of days for this practicum is 40 days. Practicum program: Learning objectives are based on the formulation of a detailed learning plan which is individually negotiated by the student, field teacher and CSU staff. There are a minimum of three liaison contacts with CSU staff including 1 on-site visit from a CSU staff person or their representative.
