Abstract:

This subject is designed to provide the students with orientations and functional skills in academic work and professional practices, with particular reference to professional development in the field of Aboriginal mental health. Using a topic format, it begins with an overview of their course and its expectation, followed by practical tools for studying at tertiary level, and the utilisation of various resources therein. This subject demonstrates various ways of acquiring professional skills including inter-relationship of theory with practice, and life long learning.

Enrolment restrictions:

Available only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in welfare and allied health programs

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- become effective self-directed and independent learners;
- develop self-esteem as adult learners;
- become productive users of library resources;
- demonstrate the application of basic computer skills;
- become effective critical thinkers and writers;
- be confident to study at tertiary level;
- demonstrate an understanding of assessment tasks and rationales for these tasks;
- understand the importance of the inter-relationship of theory and practice;
- understand the value of a mentor, clinical supervisor and tutor.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.

The residential school is compulsory as it forms a significant component of the teaching strategy in this subject. Additional learning resources are provided at these schools that build on the materials provided in the study guides (e.g. guest lecturers, videos, and learning activities). It is considered essential that students undertake these activities for them to be able to successfully meet the learning objectives of this subject.
