Abstract:

This subject examines and focuses on the principles of basic counselling skills. The process of counselling as empowerment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is explored. The emphasis on self-awareness and the appropriate counselling knowledge, skills and attitude in developing positive therapeutic relationships with clients will also be examined.

Enrolment restrictions:

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in the welfare program

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to define and discuss the term "the counselling process" within their own cultural context;
be able to apply the process and principles of "empowerment in counselling";
be aware and discuss their own life experiences and how they impact on the students own counselling skills;
be able to translate the knowledge and skills gained into practice;
be able to demonstrate basic counselling skills during an initial interview with their client;
be able to discuss and demonstrate an understanding of the process of confidentiality in the process of counselling;
be aware of 'occupational stress and burn out' in the counselling process and within their cultural context.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

becoming a counsellor ; the counselling process; basic counselling skills, micro and macro; counselling procedures and skills; the context of counselling; special cultural considerations in counselling.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
