HHS113 Substance Use: Assessment and Management (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health (NRMIH)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject introduces the student to the issues of problematic drug use in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Health care professionals will often be confronted with the complexities of caring for people who are affected by the use of substances. Substance use issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are poorly understood and are often stigmatised in mainstream health thereby leading to less than satisfactory health outcomes for Aboriginal people. This subject will examine basic concepts and terminology in the alcohol and drug field, basic pharmacology of commonly used psychoactive drugs, substance use assessment instruments, guidelines for managing intoxication and withdrawal, early & brief interventions, drug diversion pharmacotherapies.
