Abstract:

What is a crisis? How are crises managed? This subject will examine the factors that cause a crisis; the crisis situation; types of crises; and crisis resolution. Crisis situations from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective are explored. The principles involved in the management of crisis situations are described and practiced. The role of the multidisciplinary team and the role of the mental health worker in the management of crises are described.

Enrolment restrictions:

Available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in welfare and allied health programs

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to define the terms 'crisis' and 'crisis management';
identify and discuss two main crisis theories;
- be able to understand and explain the difference between 'stress' and 'crisis';
- be able to identify and discuss the phases and characteristics of a crisis;
- be able to list and explain at least four crisis intervention models;
- be able to list and explain at least five factors in the process of Crisis Counselling;
- be able to discuss the role of the crisis intervention team and worker in crisis management;
- be able to understand the principles involved in providing culturally appropriate case management for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing a crisis.

Defining crisis Types of crisis Factors that cause a crisis Crisis resolution Managing a crisis situation Families in Crisis Role of multidisciplinary team in crisis management including an Aboriginal Mental Health Professional

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.

The residential school is compulsory as it forms a significant component of the teaching strategy in this subject. Additional learning resources are provided at these schools that build on the materials provided in the study guides (e.g. guest lecturers, videos, and learning activities). It is considered essential that students undertake these activities for them to be able to successfully meet the learning objectives of this subject.
