Abstract:

Crisis management is diverse and complex. This subject, therefore, expands upon the subject content covered in Crisis Management 1. Crisis Management can be a diverse and complex intervention, this subject defines, explores and discusses the preferred models in crisis management for psychiatric emergencies, including the management of difficult and aggressive clients, post traumatic stress reactions, suicide, domestic violence and the acutely disturbed psychotic client. Legal and ethical aspects of managing such clients are included.

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in welfare programs

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to define psychiatric emergencies, difficult and aggressive clients, post traumatic stress reaction, and the acutely disturbed psychotic client;
be aware of the legal and ethical issues in psychiatric emergencies;
be aware of the management technique for dealing with anger, aggression and violence;
be able to discuss the management of and the assessment of self harm and harm to others;
be able to demonstrate and discuss the skills required for crisis management.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

psychiatric emergencies; difficult, violent and aggressive people; post traumatic stress reactions; suicide; domestic violence; the acutely disturbed psychotic client; legal and ethical aspects.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
