Abstract:
This subject expands on HHS206 Diagnosis and Management in Psychiatry 1. It provides students with the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills to assess, formulate a diagnosis, develop treatment plans and provide care for people experiencing a range of mental disorders. Students will be encouraged to explore culturally appropriate models of mental health assessment, diagnosis and care within existing legislative requirements and industry standards in mental health.

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in welfare programs
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the multi-axial approach to mental health assessment;
effectively conduct and document a culturally appropriate mental health assessment;
formulate a multi-axial diagnosis and treatment plan utilising the DSM IV mental health classification system;
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of medications in mental health care;
communicate the most appropriate treatment options for clients with a range of mental disorders using existing industry standards and legislative requirements;
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Multi-axial mental health assessment; Mental State Examination; Culturally appropriate diagnosis and management; Effective models of treatment and care in Psychiatry; Medications used in psychiatry (including management of side effects); Mental Health industry standards and legislation.
Residential School
