Abstract:

This subject equips students with a grounding in basic research methodology. The subject integrates research theories and practice methods and is designed to prepare students to conduct research projects within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and mental health settings.

Enrolment restrictions:

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course, and Indigenous students enrolled in welfare programs

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to assess the contribution of research towards the enhancement of professional practice;
- be able to understand the basic process of research;
- be able to differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research methodology;
- be able to utilise basic qualitative and quantitative research methodology;
- be able to describe the moral and ethical responsibilities of scientific investigations;
- be able to apply the NHMRC guidelines on research and protocols in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- be able to conduct critical appraisal of research papers published in journals related to mental health practices generally and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities specifically;
- be able to identify a 'problem' in one's own area of interest and practice and design a research proposal thus demonstrating an understanding and use of a basic action research methodology;
- be able to develop and present submissions/journal articles/publications based on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community needs.

Basic Research process and understanding published research Framing a research problem and hypothesis Literature review Conceptual framework Ethics Design of research: qualitative and quantitative methods Qualitative and quantitative research approaches Action research Data gathering process Data analysis 3. Doing research

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.

The residential school is compulsory as it forms a significant component of the teaching strategy in this subject. Additional learning resources are provided at these schools that build on the materials provided in the study guides (e.g. guest lecturers, videos, and learning activities). It is considered essential that students undertake these activities for them to be able to successfully meet the learning objectives of this subject.
