Abstract:

This subject examines the context of the adolescent as an individual and as a person interacting with others in various sub-systems, such as the family, peer group and school, the community and society. Also focuses upon the internal and external world of the adolescent and the relationship between the two. The content of the
course has been structured to reflect the inter-relationships between the individual adolescent and the various sub-systems, including assessment and intervention plans for adolescent problems.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to distinguish between (culturally) normal and abnormal aspects of mental health of adolescents;
be able to use strategies and programs to promote adolescent mental health;
be able to adequately assess and define appropriate intervention programs for selected mental health problems of adolescents;
be able to intervene at early stages of psychological stress and psychiatric illness in adolescents;
be able to manage a range of adolescent mental health problems, including crisis and chronic psychiatric illness presentations on an outpatient basis;
be aware of the range of treatment facilities and programs available for adolescents presenting with mental health problems.

The subject will cover the following topics:

Issues and behaviours related to normal and abnormal adolescence. Interventions relevant to working with the individual adolescent Issues and behaviours related to normal and abnormal families with adolescents Interventions relevant to working with adolescents and their families. Issues and behaviours related to normal and abnormal peer group relationships and school. Interventions relevant to working with adolescents and their peers. Issues and behaviours related to normal and abnormal adolescents within a community context. Interventions relevant to working with adolescents within a community context. Universal issues and behaviours related to normal and abnormal adolescents.
