Abstract:
This subject introduces the principles of research methodology as relevant to the health sciences. It examines the context of research in professional practice in the healthcare field, and will equip students with the basic research skills necessary for their continuing professional education. The subject considers concepts in both qualitative and quantitative research methodology, the critical appraisal of literature in science and healthcare, and includes basic statistical concepts and methods.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be aware of the moral, ethical, cultural, social, political and environmental issues and responsibilities (regionally, nationally and internationally) and their impact upon research.
- Be able to appreciate research and critically appraise the literature using appropriate resources.
- Be able to demonstrate skills in critical thinking, synthesis of information in research and innovative approaches to research.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately (oral and written) with command of literacy, numeracy and information technology skills.
- Be able to assimilate and synthesise new information in scientific / health literature.
- Have a general understanding of the basic concepts of research methodology.
- Understand and be able to use at an introductory level statistical concepts and techniques in analysing data.
- Be able to express informed opinion by utilising rational and rigorous argument.
- Be able to understand the implications of research methodologies on evidence based practice and its impact on clinical practice and policy.

Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The scientific method and research process, - Research planning, - Research designs (qualitative and quantitative), - Data collection techniques, - Ethics in research, - Sourcing health and scientific literature, - Report writing and referencing, - Descriptive and inferential statistics, - Dissemination and critical evaluation of research
