Duration: Two sessions

Abstract:

This subject builds on the knowledge gained in research methods subjects by providing students with the opportunity to develop, under the guidance of an appropriately qualified supervisor, a research proposal using a selected qualitative or quantitative methodology. After receiving approval for the proposed research topic and being allocated a supervisor, students will complete a comprehensive literature review, followed by a comprehensive research proposal and preparation of a human ethical approval application for submission to a properly constituted Institutional Ethics Committee. This proposal will form the basis of research subsequently undertaken in the Honours Project/Dissertation subject.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

# be able to identify the key steps in research planning;
# gain approval for the proposed research topic;
# be able to prepare a review of the relevant literature on the selected research topic;
# be able to develop a defence for a selected research topic;
# be able to propose and justify a methodological approach;
# be able to identify and utilise material relevant to a research activity;
# be able to prepare a detailed research proposal;
# be able to identify the key ethical considerations in human research;
# be able to prepare and submit an application for human ethical approval to a properly constituted Institutional Ethics Committee.

The place of theory Qualitative considerations Interviews Focus groups Questionnaire design Participant observation Statistical software Research funding sources Strategies for improving grant access Ethics in human research Informed consent Coercion Anonymity and confidentiality Risk benefit and analysis Storage of data Institutional ethics committees Synthesis of the above concepts to produce a proposal and associated ethics application
