Abstract:

This subject will assist students to explore the fundamental philosophy and principles underpinning health promotion. Students will examine factors influencing health and health behaviour and identify strategies and methods for the implementation of health promotion activities. Health promotion initiatives at the international, national and local level will be examined and students will apply the principles that underpin health promotion to their practice.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Define health promotion;
Discuss the development of health promotion policy at the international, national and local levels;
Identify and describe health promotion models and approaches;
Discuss determinants of health;
Determine health promotion strategies appropriate to the needs of individuals, groups and communities;
Integrate the principles of health promotion in designing a health promotion program.

Determinants of health and health behaviours of individuals and communities Health promotion theory Health promotion models and approaches Health promotion policy Ethics and values influencing individual, group and community health outcomes and policy Identify, critique and develop health promotion programmes and strategies Integration of health promotion in practice
