Abstract:
This subject examines the principles of pedagogy, andragogy and geragogy in the context of health education. The subject explores learning theories, cross-cultural communication, group dynamics and counselling principles as imperatives for the health professions to meet learning needs of clinicians and health care consumers.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Compare and contrast the principles of andragogy, pedagogy, and geragogy;
Analyse learning theories and relate them to their disciplines perspective on clinical teaching;
Review, critically evaluate, and synthesise the literature on clinical education and patient teaching;
Utilise counselling principles in an analysis of beginning practitioner and patient learning needs;
Integrate an understanding of group dynamics in an analysis of learners and teacher interactions;
Employ clinical judgement to capitalise on health teaching opportunities.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Health disciplines approach to clinical education from Australian and wider perspective. Ethics and clinical teaching. Transcultural communication. Learning theory in health contexts. Cognitive, moral, developmental and social learning theories. Pedagogical, andragogical, and geragogical approaches to learning. Theories of group development. Counselling and clinical education practice.
