Abstract:
This subject will consider the many and varied educational teaching methods utilised within various health professions. Consideration will be made of various teaching methods in both their implementation and design. Students will be encouraged to assess the success and validity of various programs and approaches.

Enrolment restrictions:
Open to all those who have completed an undergraduate degree in an allied health profession. Students should be actively employed in a clinical education role within their discipline area.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to discuss issues relating to clinical education;
demonstrate an understanding of the role of the clinical educator;
demonstrate an understanding of the needs of the learner in the educational relationship;
discuss the various clinical education techniques used the clinical setting;
discuss the background and supportive information which underpins the application of clinical education techniques;
demonstrate an appreciation of the literature, both historical and current, which relates to clinical education techniques;
demonstrate an understanding of how various clinical education techniques are utilised by different health professions but may be adapted for use by others;
use and communicate the basic terminology related to clinical education;
identify the factors which determine quality clinical education programs;
discuss and set aims and objectives for clinical education programs incorporating selecting clinical education techniques;
identify and describe the qualities of those responsible for clinical education;
discuss the role of the clinical educator;
frame programs to evaluate the success of various clinical education strategies employed; and
evaluate clinical education programs and the techniques employed and be able to reflect on their use and develop ways they may be improved.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Factors determining quality clinical education programs Models of supervision/education Styles of supervision Issues relating to clinical education The role of the supervisor Basic terminology relating to clinical education The role of the student learner Funding/costs of various clinical education programs, techniques, strategies, approaches, etc Dealing with conflict within the clinical education process Evaluating the effectiveness of clinical education techniques Development of a clinical education program Monitoring of clinical education programs Developing skills as a supervisor Ethics in supervision Challenges to clinical programs Cultural issues Supervising from a distance
