Abstract:
This is the last in the Graduate Certificate series, so that students will be better able to choose one or more current issues to explore in more depth. Issues could be related to: Research into clinical education; patient and family education; new paradigms for fieldwork, mandatory vs voluntary continuing professional education; and clinical ethics to name a few topics.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
survey the current literature available in clinical education in the field of health;
demonstrate awareness of national and international issues in clinical education;
analyse national and global perspectives to identify forces that influence the direction of clinical education;
understand how clinical education is influenced by particular philosophical models;
identify major issues from selected areas of research in clinical education;
conduct a major literature analysis on an issue of choice in clinical education;
construct a portfolio, in the form of written papers and discussion documents, on an issue of choice in clinical education.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Principles of critical analysis Introduction Critical thinking as an educational ideal Characteristics of critical thinkers Developing critical-thinking skills in clinical education Module 2: Theoretical, philosophical and practical perspectives in clinical education practices Antecedents that influenced the development of clinical education and field experiences; A reflection on concepts, theories and models in order to have an understanding of how clinical education is influenced by particular models; Broad perspectives in clinical education.
