Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the research process and encourages an appreciation of why and how research is generated. Topics include the philosophical underpinning of research traditions, quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, development of a researchable question, and critiquing research.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
demonstrate an understanding of the value of research in the health sciences;
describe the two major research traditions: quantitative or deductive research and qualitative or inductive research;
compare and contrast a range of approaches to research design;
compare and contrast a variety of data collection methods; and
demonstrate an understanding of data analysis techniques appropriate to both quantitative and qualitative research.
