Abstract:

The major focus of this subject is on an integrated critical analysis of national and international perspectives and policy issues in mental health. The subject provides opportunities for students to enhance skills required to critique contemporary practices in mental health, and as such it represents a synthesis of the various themes and perspectives in the study and analysis of mental health.

Enrolment restrictions:

Master of Nursing students. Available to Associate Students. It requires special approval from either course coordinator, subject coordinator, or head of teaching school as appropriate.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to identify the historical antecedents to the development of mental health practices and services;
understand how mental health services are influenced by particular theoretical models;
analyse theories in order to determine their impact on mental health practice;
analyse national and global perspectives and policy issues in mental health;
analyse perspectives and policies to identify forces that influence the direction of mental health practice; and
generate written papers, and prepare discussion documents, on perspectives and contemporary policy issues in mental health, that demonstrate a high level of focus, originality and clarity.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Module 1: Historical antecedents, theoretical and philosophical perspectives in the development of mental health practices. Reflection on the historical antecedents that influenced the development of mental health practices and services. reflection on concepts, theories and models in mental health practice. Implementation of principles of critical analysis. Module 2: Principles of critical analysis. implementation of principles of critical analysis. Module 3: Analysis of forces influencing the direction of mental health services. analysis of concepts, theories and models in mental health. analysis of perspectives and policies which impact on mental health practices. critique of contemporary practices in mental health.
