Abstract:
This subject introduces postgraduate students to the various methodological approaches, both qualitative and quantitative, to health research. Students will gain an understanding of research design, implementation,analysis and communication of their research to the scientific community and formulate their own research project.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to:
* Demonstrate understanding of qualitative and quantitative health research methods;
* Describe the primary means for dissemination of research findings;
* Demonstrate understanding of the requirements and procedures for ethical, and other approval, for research;
* Define a health research project using methodologies appropriate to their field of research;
*Demonstrate use and understanding of the statisticals methods, with particular reference to techniques appropriate to the proposed field of research
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
*Health Statistics
* Experimental design and implementation
*Qualitative and quantitative research methods
*Instrumental analysis in pharmaceutical research
*Clinical Research
* Presentation and analysis of research findings
* Ethical issues in research - both human and animal
* Approvals required for laboratory based research
* Critical reading and literature evaluation
*Drug information
*Scientific communications
*Scientific writing (report, grant, journal article and thesis)
