Abstract:
This subject provides an introduction to and an examination of the roles and functions of human resource management in organisations. The examination is undertaken from the perspective of how human resource management can contribute to organisational performance. The subject examines how HR functions or techniques help an organisation to perform efficiently and effectively and assist organisations to obtain a competitive advantage. In addition the subject investigates the ethical and moral implications of these functions and techniques.

Available to Graduate Diploma of Management (Professional Practice) AGMC students only.
Not available to students who have completed HRM502 or HRM571 .
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the various roles and functions of human resource management and be familiar with a range of HR practices and in particular, the role of HR department and the role of the organisation manager in utilising human resources effectively;
- be able to find and interpret recent literature on human resource management;
- be able to critically evaluate the way that human resource management in general and the functions that comprise it can contribute to organisational performance;
- be able to critically analyse and make recommendations for improvement of human resource management arrangements and practices;
- be able to describe and critique how firms can use HR initiatives to cope with workplace changes and trends such as a more diverse workforce, the global economy, downsizing, and new legislation;
- be able to identify and appraise HR strategies that fit corporate and business unit strategies, which will enable the firm to achieve a sustained competitive advantage.
