Abstract:

The subject aims to help students develop an understanding of the nature of organisational power and politics and the ethical use of a political approach to organisational change, as opposed to the traditional organisational development approach. It assumes prior study of organisational change.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to describe the characteristics of a political approach to organisational change and how it differs from an organisational development approach;
- be able to explain concepts and issues associated with the exercise of power and politics in organisations;
- be able to explain in some detail the steps involved in the ethical use of a political approach to organisational change including diagnosing power and politics, implementing political strategies, using a political approach to institutionalising change and evaluating the outcomes of the political approach;
- be able to critically evaluate the ethical use of a political approach to organisational change.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

An overview of using a political approach to organisational change and how it differs from the orgainsational development approach. The nature of power and politics in organisations and its significance in the management of organisations. The ethics of using a political approach to organisational change. Diagnosing power and politics as part of the change process. Implementing a range of strategies in the political approach to organisational change. A political approach to institutionalising change. Evaluating the outcomes of the political approach to organisational change. A critique of the political approach to organisational change.
