Abstract:

This subject is designed to provide an understanding of the need to develop capabilities within the organisation which will be used to develop competitive advantage. In today's fast changing markets, organisations need to build strong positions in the industries of the future and training has an important role in improving organisational performance. The subject covers the contribution expected of HRD as a business partner, managing knowledge, organisational learning and teamwork and the role of the HRD professional as a broker of training.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to discuss the relationship between HRD and organisational strategy (Topic 1);
- be able to explain the importance of evaluation of the HRD activities (Topic 2);
- be able to define major debates in the calculation of ROI (Return of Investment) from HRD activities (Topic 2);
- be able to discuss the concept of organisational learning (Topic 3);
- be able to discuss the responsibilities of management in the development of an environment encouraging organisational learning (Topic 3);
- be able to critically evaluate the notion of knowledge creation (Topic 4);
- be able to discuss the part that knowledge plays in the development of sustainable competitive advantage (Topic 4);
- be able to evaluate the outsourcing trend as it relates to HRD (Topic 5);
- be able to discuss the responsibilities of the stakeholders in consulting and brokering (Topic 5);
- be able to discuss the drivers of the training effort (Topic 6).
